Set up on the Equitable Life Assurance Company's roof, the copper ball was raised up the twenty foot high
mast by windlass. The time service was run by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. |

In addition to producing weather reports, the U.S. Army Signal Corps was responsible for telegraphing the time to towns and cities all over the United States. Two signalmen operated the Boston time ball. |
