One O'Clock Gun

Jay Wilson has received a special award certificate from his school for his project on the One o' clock Gun. Jay's project which was checked out by Sergeant Shannon was also awarded a top grade and put on show in the staff room. Jay's photograph can be seen in our personalities section. The committee hope Jay will continue to record the history of the time gun and keep us informed. A problem has cropped up regarding the time ball on the Nelson Monument. Dorothy Marsh the Keeper of Conservation has found a metal band circling the top tower under the stonework. The reinforcing band may have been added to the tower when the timeball was set up in the 1850's to take the weight of the heavy metal ball when it falls at one. The top of the tower may have to be dismantled and rebuilt adding to the cost of the project. The committee will be meeting Historic Scotland next week to discuss updating the exhibition boards in our time gun display on the Mills Mount Battery.

Greyfriars Bobby Day proved to be a great success thanks to the dogs and owners of the Skye Terrier Club. During the reception given by the Lord Provost, the terriers' behaviour was first class. In his speech the Lord Provost emphasised the historic connection between the One o' clock Gun and the world famous dog and their importance to the city's image.

Hundreds of dog lovers turned up at the Kirkyard where Time Ball committee member Stuart Wilson wearing kilt and glengarry handed out packets of shortbread fingers to the dogs and their owners as well as posing for photographs with the terriers at the Greyfriars Bobby Drinking Fountain. The Time Ball project is now under way. The Time Ball committee consisting of Stanley Walsingham, John Lovie and Stuart Wilson are working with David McDonald of Edinburgh World Heritage Trust to refurbish both the Nelson Monument and the time ball. The Association is in the process of applying for funding to carry out the work.

The Association's James Grant exhibition is now on at the Edinburgh Room, Central Library, George IV Bridge.

Following the success of our Greyfriars Bobby display, we now have our own Bobby who lives with Association member John Lovie and his wife at North Berwick. Blue who has been in training for the last six months was featured in the 'Edinburgh Evening News' along with Stuart Wilson our public relations advisor. Greyfriars Bobby Day takes place on Sunday 4th May. Fifty terriers organised by the Skye Terrier Club will assemble on the Castle Esplanade before trotting down to Greyfriars Kirk where a service will be held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the world famous dog appearing in the cemetery. On the way the dogs will stop off at the City Chambers where a civic reception will be waiting for the terriers and their owners courtesy of the Lord Provost.

Our model time ball in the One o' clock Gun Exhibition is working again thanks to Nick Sanders our electronics wizard. Sgt. Shannon's models are also receiving a great deal of attention while the interior looks good having been redecorated by Historic Scotland's painters. Although we have no way at present of recording the total, the Exhibition probably gets over a million visitors during the year.

The project to repair the Nelson Monument time ball has now begun. Nick Sanders, John Lovie and Stuart Wilson were appointed by the main committee to form a Time Ball Sub-committee at the A.G.M. and will be working with David MacDonald of World Heritage Edinburgh to restore one of the city's most famous landmarks.

To date our website has received over 335,500 hits.

Barbara Smith Edinburgh Castle's Executive Manager has arranged for the One o' clock Gun Exhibition display boards to be updated. The new models look good but unfortunately our time ball model is out of commission. Sergeant Shannon will be arranging to get it fixed. He is also considering using the other cabinet to display world time gun models. It should be possible to obtain the various types of guns and model figures. The Black Watch Memorial is now being cleaned. The job should be finished in five weeks time.
